The Symphony no. 3, op. 31 is projected to be a four-movement work. The second movement is a portrait from a distance. The opening melody is played by the cello section in unison. The fourth movement was the first completed and consists of an instrumental "scherzo" blending traditional orchestral writing with elements of the popular music of America, Latin America, and jazz. The movement explores the idea of bringing emotional baggage from a previous relationship into a new one -- hence the title "Ghosts." The symphony is dedicated to my grandmother, Ann P. McMillan.
